Robin Robin convicted of murdering fellow international student Navjeet Singh Sandhu and attempting to kill another man following a drunken argument in Melbourne
A 30-year-old Indian-origin man has been sentenced to 27 years in prison in Australia for fatally stabbing a fellow international student and attempting to murder another man during a violent confrontation in Melbourne.
Robin Robin was sentenced in the Victorian Supreme Court on Friday after being found guilty of murdering 22-year-old Navjeet Singh Sandhu and attempting to murder 30-year-old Sharwan Singh in Ormond in May 2024.
The court imposed a minimum non-parole period of 20 years, meaning Robin must serve at least that period before becoming eligible to apply for parole.
The incident followed a gathering at Robin’s home, where he had been drinking whisky with friends to celebrate his brother Abhijeet buying a car.

According to the prosecution case, Sharwan later left the gathering to play cards at Navjeet’s home without saying goodbye

Robin subsequently called him, abused him and repeatedly demanded that he return
When Sharwan came back with Navjeet to collect his belongings, Robin attacked him with a knife, stabbing him in the chest. Navjeet intervened in an attempt to help his friend but was also attacked.
Navjeet suffered fatal injuries to his heart and lungs and died. Sharwan survived the assault.
Robin had claimed during the trial that he acted in self-defence. However, the jury convicted him of murder and attempted murder.
Justice Andrew Tinney described the attack as unprovoked and driven by “murderous anger”. He also criticised Robin’s lack of genuine remorse for the offences.
Following the attack, Robin fled Victoria with his brother. He was arrested in New South Wales two days later and has spent more than two years in custody.
Navjeet’s father, Jitender Sandhu, attended the sentencing by video link. He told the court that his son’s death had destroyed the hopes and dreams of the family.
Robin is expected to face deportation to India after completing his prison sentence.
