Twelve scholarships are available across 12 British institutions for eligible Indian students pursuing one-year postgraduate courses
Indian students planning to pursue postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom can apply for GREAT Scholarships offering financial support of at least £10,000 towards tuition fees for the 2026–27 academic year.
The programme offers 12 scholarships for Indian applicants across participating universities and a range of academic disciplines. It is jointly funded by the UK government’s GREAT Britain Campaign, the British Council and the participating higher education institutions.
The scholarships are intended for eligible Indian students enrolling in one-year postgraduate courses. However, the funding is primarily for tuition fees and does not cover all expenses associated with studying overseas.
Universities offering scholarships
The participating institutions for Indian students include Anglia Ruskin University, Norwich University of the Arts, Queen’s University Belfast, the Royal College of Art, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the Royal Northern College of Music, the University of Bristol, Trinity Laban, the University of Dundee, the University of Reading, the University of Surrey and UWE Bristol.
The courses covered, eligibility conditions and application procedures vary between universities. Applicants must therefore check the scholarship details published by their chosen institution before applying
Who can apply?
Applicants must be Indian citizens and hold an undergraduate degree that meets the entry requirements for their proposed postgraduate course. They must demonstrate a genuine interest in their chosen subject and satisfy the university’s English-language proficiency requirements.
Successful candidates are also expected to participate in networking activities involving other GREAT scholars, maintain contact with the British Council and their university, and represent the programme as scholarship ambassadors. They may be asked to share their experiences with future applicants after completing their studies.
How to apply
Interested students should visit the British Council’s official GREAT Scholarships India webpage and identify the participating university offering funding for their preferred course. Applications must then be submitted according to the instructions provided by the institution.
Deadlines differ across universities, so applicants should verify the relevant dates and requirements directly with the institution. Successful candidates are notified by the respective universities, with scholarship funding provided after registration.
Prospective applicants should also budget separately for accommodation, food, travel, visa charges and other living expenses. The award reduces tuition costs but should not be treated as a fully funded scholarship covering the entire cost of studying in the UK.
