A 65-year-old non-resident Indian (NRI) woman has alleged that a post office agent cheated her of ₹15 lakh by collecting recurring deposit (RD) instalments over several years without depositing the money into an account in her name, according to a police complaint in Ludhiana, Punjab.

Daresi police registered a first information report (FIR) against the accused, identified as Roshan Lal Kalra, following an inquiry into the complaint.

The complainant, Kulwant Kaur, a resident of New Shivpuri in Ludhiana, told police that she had opened an RD account through Kalra, who worked near the city’s Clock Tower area. She alleged that she handed over monthly instalments to him between 1998 and 2012, believing the money was being deposited into her account.

According to her complaint, the total amount paid during this period was ₹15 lakh.

  • Kaur moved to Canada in 2012 to live with her children, believing her savings were secure

  • When she later sought information about the money, a relative reportedly approached the agent, who allegedly assured the family that the amount would be returned and claimed that Kaur had been given a card containing the account details

However, the matter remained unresolved for years. After returning to India in 2025, Kaur approached the agent again to recover her savings but allegedly received no satisfactory response.

Her suspicions grew when she contacted the post office and was informed that no recurring deposit account existed in her name, according to the complaint.

Kaur subsequently approached senior police officials on September 11, 2025, seeking action against the agent.

Following an inquiry, police registered the case under Sections 316(2), relating to criminal breach of trust, and 318(4), relating to cheating, of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Tarsem Singh, the investigating officer, confirmed that an FIR had been registered and said the investigation was continuing.

The allegations have yet to be established in court. Further details about the recovery of the money were not immediately available.
