Emirati Razan Al Mubarak elected IUCN president

Ms. Al Mubarak is the first woman from the Arab world to head IUCN and only the second woman to lead the 73-year-old conservation organisation.

Emirati Razan Al Mubarak has been elected president of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the global body that works for protection of the natural world, a report in Gulf News (Oct 7) says.

A Dubai Media Office tweet on Tuesday, quoting His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, said: “Proud of the daughter of the Emirates, Razan Al Mubarak, being elected president of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. We are proud of all our national cadres … We are proud of our environmental achievements … And we are proud of all the daughters of the nation.”

Ms. Al Mubarak is the first woman from the Arab world to head IUCN and only the second woman to lead the 73-year-old conservation organization. She succeeds the ICUN’s former president Zhang Zinsheng. 

Her global accomplishments at Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) include overseeing the breeding of captive Scimitar-horned oryx in Abu Dhabi and reintroducing it back into its natural habitat in the the wild in Chad. This species had earlier been listed as extinct.

Ms. Al Mubarak says “I am truly honored to have been elected as the 15th President of the IUCN, especially in this critical moment when we need to elevate nature conservation to the forefront of the global sustainability agenda”. 

She adds in a statement. “I am grateful to the UAE leadership and its institutions for their support, trust, confidence, and their belief not only in me but in the importance of elevating the issue of nature conservation globally”.

With an academic background in international relations and environmental studies, Ms.  Al Mubarak brings extensive technical and executive expertise to the IUCN. 

Ms. Al Mubarak’s conservation journey began in 2001 when she helped launch Emirates Nature, an NGO affiliated with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). She later  went on to run the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund (MBZ Fund), which has contributed to over 2,250 conservation projects in over 180 countries since 2008. She has also worked with the government-run Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), as its youngest Secretary General.
