India targets 20pc ethanol blending in petrol (E20) by 2023

What is a significant development is the fact that India has now targeted producing E20 in two years, through another notification and advanced to April 1, 2023. Initially set for 2030, the target date is now in 2025 for automobile manufacturers to introduce intermediary level – E12 and E15 – compliant vehicles

Talk of sugarcane and grains such as corn, surplus rice, damaged food grains, bajra, jowar, and sweet sorghum and there you go thinking about meal times and food as such. But then these inputs are meant to create ethanol too, known for environmental benefits, the most suitable alternative blending, transportation fuel, according to a NITI Aayog report that was released in June. An annual saving of $5 billion will accrue from this as India will cut down majorly in oil imports which is currently 85% of its needs.

What is a significant development is that India has now targeted producing E20 in two years, through another notification and advanced to April 1, 2023. Initially set for 2030, the target date is 2025 for automobile manufacturers to introduce intermediary level – E12 and E15 – compliant vehicles. However, several oil-producing companies wish to know what happens if the sugarcane and other food grains crops get hit due to weather or some other reason. While E12 has 12 per cent ethanol blended with petrol, E15 has 15 cent. Currently, India is using E10 fuel (petrol blended with 10 per cent ethanol).

Accordingly, the blended fuel types have also been notified, that if there is low ethanol production for some reason, lower ethanol blending fuel should come into use by vehicles.

Meanwhile, automobile manufacturers will have to put “clearly visible stickers” on every vehicle regarding the level of its compatibility to the level of ethanol blend. The ministry is sure of its planning and is taking it forward, plugging all loopholes and considering all possibilities. There will be no wavering from India’s target of achieving 20 per cent ethanol blending in petrol (E20) by 2023.

Important to note here, ethanol-blended fuel that has lower carbon emissions is also less expensive.
