The incident has renewed discussion surrounding migrant worker protections, gig-economy labour conditions, and safety risks facing international students and expatriate workers in Australia’s urban transport sector
Victoria Police have launched an investigation after an Indian-origin Uber driver was allegedly assaulted by passengers during a late-night trip in Melbourne, according to law enforcement updates and community responses emerging within the past 24 hours.
Police officials said the driver, identified by local Indian community representatives as Harpreet Singh, suffered facial injuries after an altercation reportedly began over payment and route disputes in Melbourne’s western suburbs. Investigators stated that multiple passengers fled the scene before officers arrived, while surveillance footage and ride-booking records are now being examined.

The incident has generated strong concern among Indian-Australian transport workers and international student communities because many overseas Indians rely on rideshare driving and delivery work for supplementary income

Community organisations in Victoria said the case reflects broader safety anxieties among migrant gig-economy workers operating during late-night hours
Rideshare industry representatives urged stronger safety protections, including faster emergency response integration and tougher penalties for passenger violence. Indian diaspora groups also requested increased police engagement with migrant worker communities vulnerable to assault and exploitation.
Australian transport labour analysts noted that attacks involving rideshare drivers have become a growing concern in major cities where gig-economy workers frequently operate alone during overnight periods. Migrant workers are often disproportionately represented in these sectors.
The Indian Consulate in Melbourne acknowledged awareness of the case and stated that officials remain in contact with local authorities and community leaders regarding the investigation.
Victoria Police urged witnesses and nearby businesses to provide additional information that may assist investigators in identifying the suspects. Authorities indicated that assault and robbery-related charges could follow once arrests are made.
