Canada’s immigration department has issued a warning to international students about the risks of misinformation and scams when applying for a study permit. A study permit, also known as a student visa, is required to study at approved Canadian institutions. The permit allows foreign nationals to enrol in long-term courses at schools recognised by provincial or territorial authorities.

Before applying, students must obtain a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI). “You must have a letter of acceptance before you apply,” the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) emphasised.

Applicants can submit their applications independently or use a representative. However, IRCC stressed that students are fully responsible for the accuracy of the information in their applications, regardless of who prepares it. Providing false or misleading details can lead to the refusal of the study permit and a ban from entering Canada for up to five years.

  • The application fee for a study permit is CAN$150. Students must ensure all documents, including academic records and identity papers, are genuine and complete

  • Misrepresentation, even if unintentional or made by a third party, is taken seriously and can have severe consequences

IRCC also urged applicants to remain alert to fraudulent services offering faster approvals or fee reductions. Only the official Canadian government portal should be used to submit applications and pay fees.
