Chandigarh-born Charu Sood is Deputy Mayor in UK

Charu’s father, Shashi Bhushan Sood who lives in Chandigarh said: “She is also among the youngest to be elected for the second consecutive term. She did her schooling from Chandigarh before moving to Barcelona and later to the UK”.

CHANDIGARH: Chandigarh-born Charu Sood has been elected Deputy Mayor of Elmbridge (UK). She retained her councillor’s seat for the second consecutive term in the Elmbridge Borough Council in the recent elections, a report in The Tribune, Chandigarh, says.

She was first elected from the same seat in 2018 and made a name for herself. The win was even special as Charu was one of the star candidates for the Conservatives in Elmbridge and one of the few who managed to retain their seats.

“She won with a clear majority despite a poor showing by the   Conservatives’  in the elections. She is perhaps the only one from the city to be elected as the Deputy Mayor of Elmbridge,” said Shashi Bhushan Sood, Charu’s father, who lives in Chandigarh.

He said, “She is also among the youngest to be elected for the second consecutive term. She did her schooling from Chandigarh before moving to Barcelona and later to the UK.

Charu is an entrepreneur, a community champion, an environmentalist and an Elmbridge borough councillor. 

As a community champion, she has played a key role in mobilising community support in events of emergencies and tragedies. 

Through the years, she has also actively supported various charities in Elmbridge, specifically the ones working for the children, the domestic abuse victims and the homeless. She has been involved in food collection and deliveries for the food bank, provided hot dinners for the homeless at the Molesey Night Shelter and organised gift bag donations for domestic abuse victims over the Christmas period.

Charu is a strong advocate for the environment in the local community. She has worked tirelessly in bringing the local businesses, residents, children and organisations together in doing their bits for the environment. 

Charu is an entrepreneur, a community champion, an environmentalist and an Elmbridge borough councillor. As a community champion, she has played a key role in mobilising community support in events of emergencies and tragedies. 

Elected to the Elmbridge Borough Council in 2018, she has been a strong voice for her constituents in the council chamber and worked round the clock addressing issues and concerns raised by the local residents.

Charu wants to leave a legacy of a strong community and civic pride for future generations, especially for her 3 young daughters. She recognises the importance of family in the society and wants every child to have a happy childhood and a happy family.
