Indian state-owned firm to provide project management and engineering services for planned 700,000-barrel-a-day facility in Lamu
Engineers India Ltd (EIL) has secured a contract worth about $450 million from Nigeria’s Dangote Group to provide project management and engineering services for a planned refinery and petrochemical complex in Kenya.
The agreement covers the development of a 700,000-barrel-per-day greenfield refinery in Lamu on Kenya’s coast. EIL will act as the project management consultant and provide engineering, procurement and construction management services, according to a regulatory filing and company statements.
The contract extends an existing relationship between EIL and the Dangote Group. The Indian company previously provided consultancy services for Dangote’s 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery at the Lekki Free Zone in Nigeria, one of the largest single-train refineries in the world. EIL is also involved in work linked to the Nigerian facility’s planned expansion.

EIL said the project is expected to strengthen fuel availability in East Africa and support regional energy security. The refinery is also expected to supply petroleum products to international markets once operational.
The Kenya project comes as Dangote is also seeking external investment in its Nigerian refinery. The group launched an initial public offering in September to raise about $1.6 billion, with the offer scheduled to close on October 13 and trading expected to begin in November, according to Business Insider Africa.
For Engineers India, the Kenya contract further expands the Indian engineering firm’s involvement in major energy infrastructure projects in Africa.
