Vice President and Chief Minister highlight Goa’s progress while honouring freedom fighters and community contributors
Goa celebrated its 40th Statehood Day with a grand function at the Kala Academy in Panaji on Monday, bringing together political leaders, government officials and citizens to commemorate four decades of the state’s progress and identity.
Addressing the gathering, Vice President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan said Goa’s development was integral to the vision of a developed India, stating that there could be no “Viksit Bharat” without a “Viksit Goa”. On his first official visit to the state, he praised Goa’s unique blend of cultural heritage, education and civic awareness, highlighting its historic temples, churches and traditions.
The Vice President also paid tribute to former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and commended the state government for its efforts in transparent governance, inclusive growth and sustainable development. He expressed confidence in Goa’s potential to emerge as a leader in the blue economy while urging young people to harness their creativity to shape the future.

Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant honoured Goa’s freedom fighters and recalled key milestones in the state’s liberation struggle, including the Cuncolim Revolt and the role of revolutionary leader Deepaji Rane

He acknowledged the support of patriots from across India during Operation Vijay and emphasised the government’s commitment to building a self-reliant and progressive Goa through initiatives such as Swayampurna Goa
Sawant also highlighted ongoing infrastructure development and administrative reforms, including the creation of Goa’s third district, Kushavati.
The celebrations included the screening of a documentary chronicling Goa’s transformation over the past 40 years, the release of a commemorative stamp and special cover honouring renowned cartoonist Mario Miranda, and the launch of the coffee table book Goa Engineering the Next Era.
Several awards and recognitions were presented during the event, including honours for dairy farmers under the Gopal Ratna Award Scheme, Swayampurna villages and community volunteers. Appointment letters were also distributed to newly selected recruits, while enhanced support under the Dayanand Social Security Scheme was announced.
The event concluded with a celebration of Goa’s achievements, reflecting the state’s pride, unity and aspirations as it enters its fifth decade of statehood.
