Ministry of External Affairs commits to aiding Indian national facing death sentence in Yemen, navigating the legal complexities for a just resolution
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Thursday that India is providing comprehensive consular assistance to an Indian national sentenced to death in Yemen. The individual’s mercy plea had recently been rejected by the apex court in Sanaa.
MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi addressed the media, stating, “On the issue of the Indian national in Yemen, we’ve been following this case, and we are aware of the recent developments. We are extending consular assistance. However, as it involves legal proceedings in their country, I would refrain from commenting on those specific steps. But certainly, we are in touch.”
The case involves an Indian national who received a death sentence in Yemen in 2020. The appellate court and the Supreme Court of Yemen rejected her appeal. The charges against her relate to the alleged murder of a Yemeni national
Bagchi emphasized, “We are extending whatever consular assistance we can. But do understand that this is a legal process in their country too. And we will see in whatever way we can continue with this process.”
