India’s Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, felicitated 2021 Pravasi Bharatiya Samman awardees at a function held at the at India House in Washington, news agency PTI reported.
The Indian Ambassador described the awardees as vibrant Indian-American diaspora, a key pillar of the burgeoning ties between the two large democracies.
“The diaspora is the ‘living bridge’ between the people of India and the US,” Sandhu said.
This year’s Pravasi Bharatiya Samman from US are Mukesh Aghi (business), Arvind Phukan (environment technology), Nilu Gupta (promoting Indian culture), Federation of Indian Associations, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, (community service), Sudhakar Jonnalagadda (medicine).
The PTI quoted Mukesh Aghi, who said, “ “I was honoured to receive the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman from Indian Ambassador Sandhu. Thank you for recognising me, and for all you do to strengthen the bond between the US and India.”
Traditionally, the Award is presented by the Indian President at a function in India on the occasion of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas
Aghi is the president of the US India Strategic and Partnership Forum, and leads the Federation of Indian Associations (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut).
Those who were given the award included:
– Mukesh Aghi: Business
– Arvind Phukan: Environment technology
– Nilu Gupta: Promoting Indian culture, Federation of Indian Associations, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, community service
– Sudhakar Jonnalagadda: Medicine.
This year’s Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas that gives Pravasi Bharatiya Samman held virtual mode in January due to Covid-19 pandemic.
Traditionally, the Award is presented by the Indian President at a function in India on the occasion of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.
