Subramanyam called for a comprehensive approach to immigration reform, combining border security with adjustments to legal immigration policies
Suhas Subramanyam, a young Indian-American politician and current Virginia State Senator, is running for the U.S. House of Representatives from Virginia’s 10th Congressional District. As the likely winner in the upcoming November general elections, Subramanyam has prioritized immigration reform and economic growth, especially for small businesses, reported PTI.
In a recent interview, Subramanyam emphasized the need for a robust U.S. economy and underscored the importance of supporting federal workers in the Washington, D.C. suburbs, where his district is located. “We must protect federal workers and tackle rising living costs,” he stated, adding, “A strong economy depends on business growth, and addressing economic challenges is key.”
“While securing borders is essential, we must also focus on fixing the legal pathways and addressing issues like country quotas. Even if comprehensive reform is slow, we should at least prioritize the needs of immigrants who are contributing to society and doing the right thing.”

If elected, Subramanyam will become the first Indian-American from the East Coast and the southern United States to join Congress. He aims to join the “Samosa Caucus,” which currently consists of five Indian-Americans serving in the U.S. Congress: Ami Bera, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ro Khanna, Pramila Jayapal, and Shri Thanedar. “Having a seat at the table will create positive change for our community,” Subramanyam remarked.
Immigration reform is a core issue for Subramanyam, who has promised to address the outdated legal immigration system, particularly focusing on H-1B visa holders facing prolonged green card wait times due to country-specific quotas. “Countries like India bring immense talent, which can play a significant role in shaping America’s economic future. We must fix the system to ensure their contributions are not delayed,” he said.
