India condemns the incident as maritime security concerns grow in the Gulf region
An Indian-flagged cargo vessel sank off the coast of Oman after coming under attack, but all 14 crew members were rescued safely by the Omani Coast Guard, Indian authorities confirmed.
The vessel caught fire following the attack before eventually sinking in Omani waters. The crew was brought ashore to Dibba Port, where officials said all seafarers were safe and in good health. Necessary immigration and administrative formalities have also been completed.
India strongly condemned the attack, describing it as “unacceptable”, and called for greater protection of commercial shipping and civilian seafarers operating in the region. The Ministry of External Affairs said it remains in close contact with the Omani government, the Indian Embassy in Muscat and relevant maritime agencies to monitor the situation and support the affected crew.
According to available reports, the vessel was transporting livestock from Somalia to the United Arab Emirates when it was struck by what is believed to have been a drone or missile, triggering a fire that ultimately led to its sinking. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in Gulf waters, where commercial shipping has faced increasing risks due to regional tensions. Maritime authorities and shipping companies have stepped up safety measures for vessels transiting strategic sea routes, including those near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest energy shipping corridors.
The successful rescue operation by the Omani Coast Guard prevented any loss of life, and Indian officials expressed appreciation for the swift response of the Omani authorities. The incident has renewed calls from the international maritime community for enhanced security and protection of merchant vessels operating in conflict-prone waters.
