Indo-Caribbean Cultural Centre to screen Anita Chandradath Singh’s ‘Yatra: The Journey of the Indian Presence in Trinidad and Tobago’

ICC Centre invites participation in 162nd ‘ICC zoom public meeting’

In 1995, India-born, Trinidad-and-Tobago citizen, Anita Chandradath Singh created a landmark 25-part documentary series for CCN TV6 entitled ‘Yatra – The Journey of the Indian Presence in Trinidad and Tobago’ to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Indian Arrival Day in the twin-island nation.

Between 1845 to 1917, 14 shiploads of indentured workers were brought to Trinidad under British colonial rule to save a failing sugarcane industry.  It is a story of toil, exploitation, survival and preservation.

Through an engaging narrative and sensitive visualisations, the documentary traces the history and socio/cultural practices of Indo-Trinidadians. The documentary pays tribute to their lasting legacy.

Indo-Trinidadians have not only preserved their ancestral cultural traditions but have added, in no small measure, to the cultural mosaic of multi-ethnic, multi-cultural Trinidad and Tobago.  Yatra has been screened in several countries and at film festivals.

One can join on Sunday (July 9, 2023) for the 162nd weekly ICC ZOOM Public Meeting, at (1.00 p.m. Belize), (3.00 p.m. New York/Eastern time), (3.00 p.m. Trinidad/Atlantic time), (3.00 p.m. Guyana), (4.00 p.m. Suriname), (8.00 p.m. England), (9.00 p.m. South Africa), (11.00 p.m. Mauritius), (Mon 12.30 a.m., India), (Mon 7.00 a.m. Fiji).
