Everyone knows what kind of an extraordinary, world class cricketer Virat Kohli is, with numerous accolades and stirring records, under his belt. His skills extend far beyond the willow not just as a stylish batman, though it must be admitted that of late he has been rather off colour.

But all that pales away into insignificance when you look at another remarkable side of his persona. In a different sort of innings, the cricketer has left food aficionados completely bowled over with his own brand of fine dining and quality food.

The menu of his Mumbai restaurant, ‘One8 Commune’ is making waves on the internet. The name refers to his sport’s jersey number 18, prominently displayed on a wall, which effectively bridges his two worlds of cricket and hospitality

While the ambience of the place is airy and sunny, Kohli stresses that food quality matters more than anything else. “Every dish is crafted to ensure guests leave satisfied and return for more”, he states simply with a reassuring smile.

The restaurant’s menu includes a variety of options, ranging from plant-based dishes to meat and seafood. There is also a section called “Virat’s Favourites,” which features dishes like tofu steak, mushroom dumplings with truffle oil, and a superfood salad, reflecting Kohli’s recent vegetarian lifestyle.

The restaurant also carries a strong reminder of its previous owner, Kishore Kumar. Kohli, a self-confessed fan, called the singer “charismatic”. It promises a welcoming vibe designed for every community.

  • And now for a few more interesting facts about Kohli as a cricketer
  • It must be stressed here that his skills as a fielder are equally astonishing and breathtaking, especially his impossible catches; catches that shouldn’t really have happened – but they did because he was there
  • He’s recently clinched another record, this time for the highest number of catches – 77

You might say that that the player has a “Fevicol-Grip”, because whatever comes anywhere near his hands, just sticks in it like magic. But this ‘Fevicol bit’ reminds me of a chance conversation I once had with a fellow traveller on a train journey years ago.

I can’t recall the gentleman’s name now, but he kept bragging about the 7-8 jobs he had changed and recently joined a new company. On inquiry, he smugly announced “Fevicol”. That gave me the perfect opening for a swift rejoinder: “Well, I really do hope you will stick with this job”.

Perhaps that double entendre of mine just proved too much for him. After that there was complete silence for the rest of the journey.

I wonder if I could call that kind of silence a “Fevicol silence”, because following my last dialogue, his lips were sealed shut for the rest of the journey.

Well, so much for my little diversionary aside. But I suppose its only proper to get back to Virat Kohli and the main narrative.

India recently lost the three-match series against Australia 1-2 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

All eyes were on Virat Kohli, particularly after he scored two consecutive ducks in the first two games of the series.

But in the last match, things turned out differently. Kohli shone with a fighting half-century. Rohit Sharma struck an unbeaten century, and pacer Harshit Rana picked up four wickets as India won the final match by nine wickets, although they lost the series 1-2.

Even before he came to bat for the last time in Australia, Kohli made history on the field in the first innings as he broke a massive world record held by Steve Smith, with 76 catches against England.

He picked up a solid catch off a delivery from Washington Sundar to dismiss Matthew Short for 30 runs from 42 deliveries.

He now has taken 77 catches against Australia across all three formats, the most an outfield player has taken against a single opponent

He breaks the record of Steve Smith, who took 76 catches against England. This is the greatest number of catches an outfield player has taken against a single opponent.

Here are the players with the most catches against a single opposition across all formats:

Player  Team   Opponent        Catches

Virat Kohli      India    Australia         77

Steve Smith     Australia         England           76

Mahela Jayawardene  Sri Lanka        England           72

Allan Border   Australia         England           71

Mahela Jayawardene  Sri Lanka        Pakistan          68

Mark Waugh   Australia         West Indies     68

According to Zomato, prices of the dishes on the menu at the Juhu outlet are on the higher side, with steamed rice at Rs 318, salted fries at Rs 348, tandoori roti or baby naan at Rs 118, and mascarpone cheesecake at Rs 748.

The Mumbai restaurant is not Kohli’s first foray into hospitality; he already has outlets in Delhi, Kolkata, and Pune.

As far as his personal life goes, Virat Kohli is married to Anushka Sharma since 2017 and the couple have two children, a daughter, Vamika, and a son named Akaay.
