Traditional music, dance, crafts and cuisine bring the culture of India’s Northeast to audiences in the UK
Members of the Northeast Indian diaspora came together in London to celebrate the region’s diverse cultural heritage through a vibrant showcase of traditional music, dance, textiles and cuisine, highlighting the growing global presence of the community. The event was organised as part of the UK’s South Asian Heritage Month celebrations and drew participants from across several northeastern states of India.
Held at the Indian Gymkhana Club, the programme featured performances representing Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and Sikkim. Artists performed folk and classical dances, while traditional songs and indigenous musical instruments reflected the rich cultural traditions of the region. Visitors also explored displays of handwoven textiles, handicrafts and regional artwork that highlighted the craftsmanship of Northeast India.
Organisers said the event aimed to strengthen cultural ties among the diaspora while introducing British audiences to the unique traditions, languages and history of India’s northeastern states. Community members described the gathering as an opportunity for younger generations born or raised overseas to connect with their roots and preserve their cultural identity
Food also formed a key part of the celebrations, with stalls serving a range of traditional dishes from across the region. The event encouraged interaction between communities and promoted greater awareness of the Northeast’s cultural diversity among visitors from different backgrounds.
The celebration reflected the increasing role of the Indian diaspora in promoting regional cultures abroad through community-led initiatives. Such events continue to provide a platform for cultural exchange, strengthen people-to-people ties between India and the United Kingdom, and reinforce the contribution of diaspora communities in preserving and sharing their heritage across generations.
