PM Modi participates in COP28 summit in Dubai

Arriving on November 30 for the World Climate Action Summit, PM Modi is set to address the COP28 meeting on December 1. This United Nations’ Conference of the Parties on climate is crucial for global leaders to assess progress under the Paris Agreement and plan future climate actions.

Upon his arrival in Dubai, a lively cultural dance performance by the Indian diaspora celebrated PM Modi’s visit, echoing chants of ‘Modi, Modi’ and slogans like ‘Abki Baar Modi Sarkar’ and ‘Vande Mataram.’

Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra mentioned in a briefing that PM Modi would return to India later on December 1. During his stay, the prime minister will participate in three high-level side events under the UAE presidency of COP28, taking place from November 30 to December 12.

In his statement, Modi emphasized the importance of climate action based on principles such as equity, climate justice, and common but differentiated responsibilities. He stressed the need for support to the developing world in terms of climate financing and technology transfer, ensuring access to equitable carbon and development space for sustainable development.

India’s commitment to climate action has been evident through various initiatives, including achievements in renewable energy, energy efficiency, afforestation, energy conservation, and Mission LiFE. PM Modi expressed interest in participating in special events related to the green credit initiative and climate finance.

Apart from addressing the summit, Modi is scheduled to meet with key participants, including Israeli President Isaac Herzog, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and newly-elected Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu.
