Rain cools down Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh as mercury drops

Amritsar, Ludhiana, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Mohali and Rupnagar among the places that received rain

Chandigarh: Rain lashed Chandigarh and parts of Punjab and Haryana on Sunday morning, May 7, leading to a dip in the temperature, a PTI report in The Tribune, Chandigarh, says.

The city recorded a maximum temperature of 34.9 °C, three degrees below normal. The minimum temperature stood at 17.7 °C, which was 7 degrees below normal. The temperatures are expected to rise over the next few days. There is, however, no forecast of rain for the next five days.

According to the Meteorological Department here, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Mohali and Rupnagar are among the places that received rain.

Rohtak, Bhiwani and Jhajjar in Haryana also received light showers in the morning.

A few days ago too, rain had lashed many parts of Punjab and Haryana and the maximum temperature had settled below normal.

Bad weather briefly affected flight services at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport. A morning flight from Mumbai to Chandigarh scheduled to arrive at 7.45 am was diverted to Delhi.

Rain accompanied by strong winds lashed the UT and its adjoining areas, snapping trees and affecting power supply. During the one-hour rainstorm, several tree trunks snapped and branches fell onto roads, inside parks and open spaces of Phases 2, 4, 5 and 7.

Officials said they received several calls of tree felled by the rainstorm and teams were sent to the spots. It took them several hours to clear the roads. Power supply was affected in some areas of the city as the rain, accompanied by lightning and strong winds, took residents by surprise.

In Mohali, too, rainstorm damaged trees and snapped electricity lines in several parts, leaving residents powerless for hours.

Residents said the rainstorm caused a four-hour power outage in many parts of the city. “Power supply was snapped and it was restored around 10 am on Sunday” said Sudershan Ahluwalia, a Phase 9 resident.

Residents said tall trees, some going up to 40 feet height, were a serious threat to life and property and required to be pruned before the upcoming monsoon season.

“No major damage was done this time, but the MC and GMADA should prune tall trees. With dense population and construction all around, it is risky to have very tall trees around,” said a resident.

Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul and Spiti receives fresh snow

Meanwhile another report says Lahaul and Spiti received snow on Monday morning, May 8. Reports say, the tribal district which had received 85 per cent deficit rains during March 2023, is witnessing periodical snowfall and rains, reducing the deficit to 53 per cent in May.

It’s May, but winters refuses to retreat in the mid and higher hills of Himachal Pradesh as high-altitude tribal areas received fresh snowfall on Monday making it more picturesque.

While it’s a treat for tourists, farmers especially apple growers are worried over the loss of crops due to unseasonal rains and snow.

The local Met office has issued a ‘yellow’ warning of thunderstorms and lightning on May 8 and predicted light to moderate rain in low and mid hills. Meanwhile, light rain and snow are expected in higher reaches on May 8 and 9.
