With defeat against Australian A Tomlijanovic in the third round of US Open, ended a  grand tennis journey of Serena Williams. The 29 year Australian had to fight hard for more than three hours for a win against American Serena with score board reading 7-5,6-7(4) 6-1.

Coached under able parents, Richard Williams and Oracene Prince, Serena arrived on international sports scene along with her elder sister Venus Williams and for long the Grand Slam was a family affair: all Williams. She turned professional in 1995 and by 1999, she had won her first major tournament, US Open, defeating Martina Hingis. She was a perfect mixture of power and agility and she ruled the tennis court for almost more than two decades. A professional at 14 and retirement almost at 41 , must be a coincidence, but by the time of retirement she had achieved everything a sportsperson dreams of.

2017 Australian Open was her 23rd major singles title and she surpassed Steffi Graf’s Open Era record of most number of Grand Slam victory. She is second only to Margaret Court with 24 titles….History certainly would have been different had she not been absent from sports either due to injury or later due to pregnancy

From 2002 French Open to 2003 Australian Open, she had won all the four major singles title and on each of these occasions her opponent was none other than her elder sister, a family affair. In 2014-15, she repeated Serena Slam by again winning all the four major singles title.

2017 Australian Open was her 23rd major singles title and she surpassed Steffi Graf’s Open Era record of most number of Grand Slam victory. She is second only to Margaret Court with 24 titles.

History certainly would have been different had she not been absent from sports either due to injury or later due to pregnancy.

The tennis fraternity reacted emotionally to her retirement and Roger Federer even requested her to cancel her retirement, “Please return to tennis. The tennis community and family will always welcome you with open arms and always be happy to see you again, so, please return.”

She is also known for her outfits spurring controversy and praise.
