Stalwart of our times: PM Modi pays tribute to Queen Elizabeth

The PM said he had memorable meetings with Queen Elizabeth II during his UK visits in 2015 and 2018

New Delhi :Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, September 8, condoled the demise of the longest serving British monarch saying Queen Elizabeth II would be remembered as a stalwart of our times, a report in The Tribune, Chandigarh, says.

“She provided inspiring leadership to her nation and people. She personified dignity and decency in public life. Pained by her demise. My thoughts are with her family and people of UK in this sad hour,” the PM said.

Recalling his meetings with the Queen, the PM said he had memorable meetings with Queen Elizabeth II during his UK visits in 2015 and 2018.

“I will never forget her warmth and kindness. During one of the meetings she showed me the handkerchief Mahatma Gandhi gifted her on her wedding. I will always cherish that gesture,” PM Modi tweeted.

Besides PM Modi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also expressed sorrow over the death of the Queen and said that she had a long and glorious reign.

“My condolences to the people of UK and the Royal Family on the passing away of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She had a long and glorious reign, serving her country with utmost commitment and dignity,” he tweeted.

Buckingham Palace also released a statement, the first public statement by King Charles III, saying, “The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.”
