Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Auckland on Saturday for a landmark visit to New Zealand, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the country in nearly 40 years. The visit is expected to strengthen bilateral relations, with trade, investment, defence cooperation and sports partnerships featuring prominently on the agenda.

Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon at Government House, where the two leaders are expected to review progress in economic cooperation and discuss ways to expand collaboration across key sectors. The visit follows growing engagement between the two countries and comes after the signing of the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement earlier this year, which has opened new opportunities for businesses and investors.

  • Trade remains a major focus of the discussions as both sides seek to increase bilateral commerce and investment

  • Officials are also expected to explore cooperation in agriculture, education, technology, renewable energy and innovation

  • Sports, particularly cricket, are another priority area, reflecting strong people-to-people ties between the two nations

The visit also aims to deepen strategic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. India and New Zealand are expected to enhance collaboration in maritime security, defence exchanges and regional stability, while reinforcing their shared commitment to democratic values and a rules-based international order.

During his stay, Modi is also expected to interact with members of New Zealand’s Indian community, one of the country’s fastest-growing diaspora groups. The engagement is intended to recognise the community’s contribution to New Zealand’s economy and strengthen cultural and educational links between the two countries.

The visit marks a significant milestone in India-New Zealand relations and is expected to provide fresh momentum for cooperation across economic, strategic and cultural sectors in the years ahead.
