Surat police have registered a case against a man accused of establishing a sexual relationship with a 36-year-old NRI woman by allegedly promising to marry her and later refusing to fulfil the commitment.

The case was registered by Pal police against Dharam Vora, a resident of Madhapar in Bhuj, following a complaint by the woman, who lives in a Middle Eastern country.

  • According to the complaint, the woman met Vora on Instagram in May 2023
  • The two gradually developed a relationship, during which the accused allegedly gained her trust by repeatedly discussing marriage

The woman alleged that Vora subsequently took her to a hotel near Nishal Circle in Surat’s Pal area, where they had sexual relations. She further claimed that their physical relationship continued, with additional encounters at a hotel near his residence in Bhuj.

  • The complainant told police that she travelled to India to meet the accused
  • However, when she began pressing him to marry her, he allegedly made excuses and eventually refused

She also accused Vora of humiliating her through derogatory remarks about her caste and allegedly referring to her by her caste name.

Based on her allegations, Pal police registered an offence relating to sexual relations allegedly obtained through deceitful means, along with other applicable legal provisions.

The investigation has been handed over to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Sweta Daniels, police said.

Authorities are now examining the allegations and gathering further evidence as part of the probe. The case remains under investigation, and the allegations have not been established in court.

The incident highlights the legal and personal consequences that can arise from allegations involving promises of marriage and relationships formed through social media.
