Yamuna level crosses danger mark amid more rain in Delhi, upper catchment areas

IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places in Uttarakhand and Himachal until July 22 and moderate showers in Delhi on Wednesday

New Delhi: The water level of the Yamuna in Delhi breached the danger mark again on WednesdayJuly 19, less than 12 hours after it dropped below the threshold, amid rain in the national capital, a PTI report in The Tribune, Chandigarh, says.

The Central Water Commission’s data showed the water level had reached 205.48 metres at 8 am. It is expected to rise to 205.72 metres by 6 pm.

The flow rate at the Hathnikund barrage saw a marginal rise on Tuesday afternoon, varying between 50,000 and 60,000 cusecs.

It dropped to around 39,000 cusecs by 7 am on Wednesday. One cusec is equivalent to 28.32 litres per second.

Another breach, water enters Sardulgarh town

Mansa (Punjab): Floodwater entered Sardulgarh town of Punjab’s Mansa district on Tuesday, July 18, as a new breach, the fifth over the past four days, occurred on the Ghaggar embankment at Phus Mandi.

There was panic all around as the Ghaggar water rushed towards Sardulgarh, which is 5 km from Phus Mandi. The residents started arranging sandbags outside their houses and shops. 

During the day, the district administration and villagers too had made attempts by preparing temporary embankments of soil with the help of tractors and JCB machines on the Sardulgarh-Sirsa main highway in Sardulgarh, which connects Punjab with Haryana. 

On Monday night, a small breach at Kalipur Dum village was plugged before it could get wider. Nine relief camps have been set up in Sardulgarh for flood-hit. 

Twenty-eight families of Birewala Dogra village, flooded due to a breach in Chandpura bundh (in Haryana) four days ago, have been shifted to relief camps in Budhlada. 

Sardulgarh MLA Gurpreet Singh Banwali said that apart from the breaches, an irrigation pipeline between Phus Mandi and Sadhuwala that burst was was the cause of . 

Budhlada MLA Budha Ram said the Haryana Government had given permission to plug the Chandpura bundh breach. Fearing trouble on its side, the Haryana Government had earlier imposed Section 144 at the Chandpura bundh site.
