50 model sustainable tourism destinations to be developed

The ministry has overhauled the flagship central scheme of tourism infrastructure development, Swadesh Darshan, be bringing in sustainable and responsible tourism into it

India’s Ministry of Tourism has decided to develop 50 destinations in the country as holistic sustainable tourism destinations under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 programme. The ministry has overhauled the flagship central scheme of tourism infrastructure development, Swadesh Darshan, be bringing in sustainable and responsible tourism into it.

Each state in the country has been asked to select two destinations to be considered for detailed master planning and developed as model sustainable tourism destinations under Swadesh Darshan 2.0, reported ETTravelWorld.

Arvind Singh, Secretary Tourism, Government of India said that there was an urgent need to make principles of sustainable and responsible tourism mainstream. While there were islands of excellence, it needs to be universal and widespread

Rakesh Verma, Additional Secretary, Tourism pointed out that the government would try to complete the development in a timebound manner in a time frame of two years. He also mentioned that the Travel & Tourism Development Index ranking of India was distorting and the tourism ecosystem was required to introspect and required to take corrective action.
