Uttarakhand High Court stays government’s order that allowed Chardham Yatra

The Chardham Yatra was to start from July 1

In an important decision, the Uttarakhand High Court stayed the state government’s order to start Chardham Yatra in three districts from July 1.

Even though the Yatra was meant for people of selective districts like Chamoli district, who were able to visit Badrinath Dham, people of Rudraprayag Kedarnath Dham and people of Uttarkashi district to visit Gangotri, Yamunotri.

Last year also during the first wave of the pandemic, the government started the Chardham Yatra from July 1. However, due to slowing down the second wave this time, the government had approved the yatra for Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Uttarkashi districts.

 

A division bench of Chief Justice RS Chauhan and Justice Alok Kumar Verma gave these instructions hearing a public interest litigation filed by advocates Dushyant Mainali, Satchidanand Dabral, Anu Pant, concerning the risk of possible infection due to poor health system and incomplete preparations for Chardham Yatra during the Covid period. In the virtual hearing, state Chief Secretary Om Prakash, along with other senior officers, appeared before the court.

 

The High Court stayed the decision of the Uttarakhand State Cabinet decision taken on June 25.

Only two days left, the Chardham Yatra was to start from July 1. The court also directed for a live telecast of the worship to be held in the four dhams.
