US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, announced that an Indian astronaut is set to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) by the end of this year. This significant milestone follows a promise made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States in 2023, affirming the strong collaboration between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Speaking at an event celebrating the 248th Independence Day of the United States, Garcetti highlighted the progress of the NISAR project, an Earth-observing mission jointly developed by NASA and ISRO, also slated for launch later this year.

“We are on track to send an Indian astronaut to the ISS this year, fulfilling our commitment from Prime Minister Modi’s 2023 visit.”

— Garcetti

The ambassador emphasized the potential for India and the US to enhance cooperation in research and emerging technologies, leveraging each other’s strengths. He cited India’s successful and cost-efficient Chandrayaan 3 lunar mission as an example of how both nations could benefit from combining their unique capabilities.

On the topic of civilian nuclear energy, Garcetti expressed optimism that post-elections, the Indian government would address outstanding liability issues, allowing for further collaboration. He mentioned that sites in Gujarat’s Mithi Virdhi and Andhra Pradesh’s Kovvada have been designated for US companies to construct nuclear reactors, despite existing concerns over India’s Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act of 2010.
