With these measures in place, the Kochi-Dubai ship service is set to bridge the distance between India and the Gulf, providing an accessible and economical route for expatriates.

A new, cost-effective ship service between Kochi and Dubai is on the horizon, offering Gulf expatriates a promising alternative to air travel. Spearheaded by a private company, the service aims to deliver a more affordable travel option while providing ample cargo capacity, a benefit long awaited by the expatriate community.

The Kerala Maritime Board has been reviewing proposals from several companies interested in operating this route, eventually selecting two eligible contenders.

  • The Maritime Board conducted a survey earlier this year to gauge interest in the Kochi-Dubai route, which revealed substantial demand for a ship service to the Gulf

  • Besides lower travel costs, the ship service will accommodate greater cargo volumes, meeting the needs of expatriates looking to transport belongings affordably

Following a comprehensive assessment of letters of intent, one company has initiated the search for a suitable vessel, a process expected to conclude soon. Once a vessel is identified, a detailed inspection by the Maritime Board will assess its suitability for passengers and cargo, and a report will be submitted to the government for final approvals.

The board has also begun streamlining the licensing requirements to accelerate approvals from the central government, aiming for the service to commence either by the end of this year or early next year. With Kochi’s infrastructure most capable of handling large ships among Kerala’s ports, the inaugural route will prioritize this location.
