India and US strengthen cooperation to curb illegal immigration

The commitment from both nations highlights a shared vision for orderly migration that safeguards human rights while discouraging unlawful pathways

India is working closely with the United States to deter illegal immigration, reflecting a strengthened bilateral approach on migration and mobility. In a recent media briefing on November 2, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, emphasized India’s commitment to fostering legal pathways for migration. The initiative seeks to prevent irregular migration by encouraging structured, lawful movement between the two countries.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) highlighted its ongoing collaboration with India through a recent chartered repatriation flight of Indian nationals who were in the United States without legal authorization. Conducted on October 22 by the DHS’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), this large-scale deportation marks the continuation of joint efforts to address the challenges posed by unauthorized migration and human smuggling.

India has also implemented consular processes to streamline the voluntary return of those involved in irregular migration

Assistant Secretary for Border and Immigration Policy, Royce Murray, provided further insight into these operations, revealing that approximately 1,100 Indian nationals were repatriated to India in the American financial year ending on September 30, 2024. Murray clarified that recent flights have only included adult males and females, with no minors among those deported.

The MEA spokesperson acknowledged that such deportations form part of a broader, systematic dialogue between India and the United States, aimed at establishing more accessible avenues for legal migration.

India has also implemented consular processes to streamline the voluntary return of those involved in irregular migration. “With sustained cooperation in this area, we anticipate a significant deterrent effect on illegal immigration,” Jaiswal stated.
