Canada plans to issue 437,000 study permits in 2025, marking a significant reduction from the previous year
The Canadian government has announced a 10% cut in study permits for 2025, which could pose challenges for Indian students planning to study in the country, reported gujaratsamachar.com.
This decision follows concerns over the housing crisis and rising immigration levels.
According to a statement from Canada’s immigration ministry, the country will issue 437,000 study permits in 2025, a reduction from the previous year’s numbers. This move comes after Canada first imposed a cap on international student permits in 2024 to address the worsening housing crisis.
Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in March, had pledged to lower immigration levels as public sentiment shifted against rising numbers of newcomers
In 2023, Canada issued over 650,000 study permits, pushing the number of international students in the country to over one million—nearly three times the figure from a decade ago. The rapid increase in immigration has placed significant strain on essential services such as healthcare, education, and housing while driving up housing costs.
Despite these concerns, international students remain a crucial part of Canada’s economy, as they pay significantly higher tuition fees compared to domestic students.
