US President praises ceasefire, vows to help resolve decades-old Kashmir issue through diplomacy and trade
NEW DELHI: United States President Donald Trump has offered to work with India and Pakistan to help resolve the long-standing Kashmir dispute, praising both nations for reaching a ceasefire agreement following a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam region, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
In a message posted on his platform, Truth Social, Trump stated, “I am very proud of the strong and unwaveringly powerful leadership of India and Pakistan for having the strength, wisdom, and fortitude to fully know and understand that it was time to stop the current aggression.” He added that the ceasefire potentially averted the death of “millions of good and innocent people.”
Trump hailed the ceasefire as a ‘historic and heroic decision’, offering to boost trade with both nations and assist in finding a diplomatic resolution to the Kashmir issue.
The development comes in the wake of Operation Sindoor, launched by India on May 7 in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which left 26 civilians dead. India targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) during precision air strikes.
Pakistan retaliated with drone incursions across Indian states including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. However, Indian air defence systems intercepted the attacks, preventing further escalation.
Amid the mounting tension, both countries agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday, following what Trump described as “intense diplomatic engagement” spearheaded by the United States.
“Your legacy is greatly enhanced by your brave actions,” Trump wrote. “While not even discussed, I am going to increase trade, substantially, with both of these great Nations. Additionally, I will work with you both to see if, after a ‘thousand years,’ a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir.”
Trump concluded his message by offering blessings to the leadership of both countries and expressing hope for peace.
