The backlog for getting a permanent residency in the US for an Indian is so long that it would take 195 years for someone who enters the backlog today to receive an EB-3 green card.

This was stated by Republican Senator Mike Lee recently.

The last date of processing visas for these applicants is September 30, which is also the end of the financial year in the US and after this deadline, these quotas will be lost forever.

This year, the quota for Green Cards was raised from 1, 40,000 to 2, 61,500, but due to the slow pace of application processing by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, around 1 lakh Indians will be denied visas, according to the department of state office in charge of determining visa usage.

The last date of processing visas for these applicants is September 30, which is also the end of the financial year in the US. After this deadline, the quotas will exhaust forever.

A lawsuit has been filed by 125 Indian and Chinese nationals which states that in 2020, the pandemic slowed down the process and in 2021, only two months are left to process the applications.

The issues of immigration were discussed when a delegation of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community met US President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris on August 4.

Hundreds of thousands of gainfully employed legal immigrants in the US waiting for a decade or more to adjust to permanent resident status are unable to do so due to a lack of available visa numbers.
