Indian expatriates in the UAE are rushing to complete formalities under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, a major nationwide exercise underway across 12 states and union territories. With the draft rolls scheduled for release on December 9, thousands of NRIs are sending required documents to relatives in India or preparing to apply online to secure their voter status ahead of next year’s elections.

With the final electoral list due in February 2026, the community is racing against time to secure representation in the democratic process

The revision aims to update voting records, delete fraudulent entries, and add new ones—a process last conducted over two decades ago. For many NRIs, this is a rare chance to ensure their presence in the electoral list. Indian social worker Muneer Berike emphasized that overseas electors must not miss this window, as India now allows NRIs to register using Form 6A.

NRIs can review their status via respective state portals and subsequently apply through the Election Commission’s voters.eci.gov.in portal. Applicants must provide identity documents, passport details, reasons for living abroad, and information about relatives enrolled as voters back home. Unlike resident electors, overseas electors do not receive a voter ID card and must vote in person in India, carrying their passport as identification.
