In the past five years, a significant number of Indian students have faced deportation or denial of entry while pursuing education abroad, according to recently released parliamentary data. The United Kingdom recorded the highest number of deportations, with 170 Indian students sent back. Australia followed with 114 deportations, while Russia and the United States reported 82 and 45 deportations, respectively. The statistics are current as of January 1, 2025.

In addition to deportations, a small number of students were denied entry. The United States refused visas to 62 students, while Kyrgyzstan denied study visas to 11 Indian applicants. These figures highlight that while most Indian students gain successful entry abroad, some face hurdles due to strict immigration and educational regulations.

  • When asked in parliament about the reasons for deportations or visa denials, the minister clarified that most cases involve violations of host country rules

  • Common causes include breaching student visa conditions, engaging in unauthorized work, participating in illegal business activities, or contravening local laws

  • Actions such as inciting ethnic tension, promoting separatism, or distributing prohibited material also contribute to deportations in certain countries

Financial requirements remain another critical factor. Some students were sent back due to insufficient funds, unpaid university fees, or inability to prove adequate financial capacity to sustain themselves while studying. Additionally, failure to maintain minimum attendance, withdrawal from courses, or non-enrollment in the registered academic programs have also been cited as reasons for deportation.

The data underlines the importance of compliance with the rules of host countries. Indian students aspiring to study overseas are advised to carefully adhere to visa conditions, maintain regular attendance, meet financial obligations, and avoid involvement in activities that could violate local laws. While studying abroad offers valuable opportunities, understanding and following regulations is essential to avoid disruptions to one’s academic journey.
