As the investigation continues, the case has once again highlighted concerns around domestic violence and the importance of early intervention and community awareness in preventing such tragedies
Canadian authorities are investigating the killing of a 30-year-old Indian woman in Toronto in what police believe may be a case of intimate partner violence. The victim, identified as Himanshi Khurana, was found dead inside a residence in the city’s west end, prompting a nationwide manhunt for her partner, who is the prime suspect in the case.
Toronto Police have issued a Canada-wide warrant for the arrest of 32-year-old Abdul Ghafoori on a charge of first-degree murder. Investigators say Khurana and Ghafoori were known to each other and were believed to be in an intimate relationship. Police have released images of both the victim and the suspect as part of their appeal to the public for information that could lead to Ghafoori’s arrest.
The investigation began late Friday night when officers responded to a missing person report in the Strachan Avenue and Wellington Street West area at approximately 10:40 pm. After several hours of inquiry, police located Khurana early Saturday morning, around 6:30 am, inside a residence. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities confirmed that the case was being treated as a homicide.
* The Toronto Police Homicide Unit took over the investigation
* While officials have not disclosed further details about the circumstances surrounding the death, they have emphasized that there is no known threat to public safety beyond the suspect being sought
* Law enforcement agencies across Canada have been alerted, and efforts are ongoing to track down the accused
Police have urged anyone who may have information about the suspect’s whereabouts to come forward immediately. “We are appealing to the public,” a police spokesperson said, noting that timely tips could be critical to ensuring a swift arrest.
The killing has sent shockwaves through the Indian community in Canada and drawn an official response from Indian authorities. The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed deep sorrow over Khurana’s death and extended condolences to her family. In a statement shared on social media, the Consulate said it was in close contact with local authorities and was providing all possible assistance to the victim’s family during this difficult time.
