Pongal, one of India’s most widely celebrated Hindu harvest festivals, was marked with special enthusiasm by the Tamil community in Singapore in 2026. Celebrated during the Tamil solar month of Tai, Pongal coincides with Makar Sankranti, a festival observed across India and among Indian communities worldwide. This year, both Thai Pongal and Makar Sankranti fell on Wednesday, January 14.

In Singapore celebrations were organised at Little India and the Indian Heritage Centre, which have become focal points for the festivities. Streets were adorned with colourful decorations, traditional kolams, and festive displays that reflect the spirit of thanksgiving and renewal associated with the harvest festival.

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong called upon citizens and residents from all communities to join the celebrations and experience the festive atmosphere. In a message shared on social media platform X, he highlighted the cultural importance of Pongal and its values of gratitude, family bonding, and respect for tradition

He described the festival as a time to come together, give thanks for nature’s bounty, honour cultural roots, and welcome the year ahead with hope and positivity.

Sharing a vibrant image of preparations underway, the Prime Minister encouraged people to visit Little India or the Indian Heritage Centre to enjoy the celebrations. His message reflects Singapore’s strong commitment to multicultural harmony and mutual respect among its diverse communities.

Pongal holds deep significance for Tamils as it celebrates the harvest and pays tribute to the Sun God, nature, and farm animals that support agriculture. Traditional rituals include cooking the sweet dish ‘pongal’, offering prayers, and spending time with family and friends.
