Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have ordered the arrest of 35 individuals, including 19 Indian nationals, accused of spreading misleading and fabricated content online related to the ongoing Middle East conflict.

The UAE’s Attorney General, Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, announced that the suspects are facing charges for publishing manipulated videos and misinformation on social media platforms during the regional crisis triggered by recent military strikes involving Iran, Israel and the United States.

According to prosecutors, the accused individuals used digital platforms to circulate misleading narratives, edited video footage and AI-generated clips designed to create panic and misrepresent events taking place in the country.

Officials said the defendants were divided into three groups based on the type of content they allegedly circulated.

The first group shared authentic video footage showing missile interceptions and aerial activity within the UAE’s airspace. However, prosecutors say the clips were edited with commentary and sound effects suggesting active attacks or conflict inside the country, potentially causing unnecessary alarm among residents.

A second group allegedly produced fabricated visual content using artificial intelligence tools or reused footage from incidents outside the UAE while falsely claiming that they had occurred within the country.

Authorities said clips often included manipulated imagery of explosions, missiles and smoke near well-known landmarks to give the impression that the UAE was under direct attack.

The third group was accused of promoting propaganda supporting a foreign state involved in the conflict, including praise for its political and military leadership while circulating content portraying military operations as achievements.

Prosecutors said the dissemination of such material could undermine national security and public order by spreading misinformation during a sensitive security situation.

The UAE has strict laws regulating the spread of false information and digital content that could threaten national stability. Under local legislation, individuals found guilty of such offences can face prison sentences of at least one year along with fines starting from AED 100,000.

Authorities also warned that attempts to manipulate public opinion using AI-generated media or misleading digital narratives will be dealt with firmly.
