Canada tightens post-graduation work permit checks, impacting Indian students

The shift signals a tightening phase in Canada’s education-to-immigration pipeline, with long-term implications for Indian student mobility

Canadian authorities have intensified verification checks for Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP), creating fresh uncertainty for Indian students who rely on the programme as a pathway to employment and permanent residency. The move focuses on validating academic credentials, institutional compliance, and job-role alignment after graduation.

Indian students form the largest international cohort in Canada and are among the biggest beneficiaries of PGWP, which allows graduates to work for up to three years. Under the tightened regime, authorities are scrutinising whether students completed eligible programmes at designated institutions and whether employment aligns with qualifications.

Education consultants report delays in processing and a rise in requests for additional documentation. Graduates are being advised to maintain detailed academic records and ensure their employment clearly matches the field of study. Even minor discrepancies—such as course transfers or programme changes—are triggering reviews.

Employers are also adapting, as clearer documentation is now required to support visa applications. Smaller firms, in particular, are seeking guidance to avoid compliance risks when hiring international graduates.

Policy analysts say the checks are part of a broader effort to preserve programme integrity after concerns over misuse by non-compliant institutions. However, the increased scrutiny is raising anxiety among genuine applicants navigating already complex pathways.

For Indian students, the development reinforces the importance of careful programme selection and documentation. While Canada remains a preferred destination, evolving rules are pushing applicants to plan more strategically.
