Congress MP praises Oman’s humanitarian response as concerns grow over the safety of Indian crews in conflict-hit regional waters
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Oman for rescuing 21 Indian seafarers following an attack on the oil tanker MT Settebello in the Gulf of Oman, highlighting the Sultanate’s prompt humanitarian response during a period of heightened regional tensions.
In a message posted on social media, Tharoor thanked Oman for its “swift and courageous” efforts to save the Indian crew members after the vessel came under attack. He said that although the deaths of three Indian sailors in the incident had left the nation grieving, India’s appreciation for Oman’s support remained profound.
The rescue operation was carried out by Omani authorities after the tanker was struck in the Gulf of Oman, one of the world’s busiest maritime routes. Twenty-one Indian crew members were brought to safety, while three others lost their lives in the attack. The incident has renewed concerns over the security of commercial shipping and the safety of Indian seafarers operating in the strategically important waters surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Tharoor’s remarks came amid wider criticism of the circumstances surrounding the attack

He questioned the use of lethal force against a commercial vessel and urged greater accountability, stressing that merchant ships navigating the region frequently employ Indian nationals who should not be exposed to unnecessary danger
The rescue has also drawn attention to the close cooperation between India and Oman in maritime safety and emergency response. Oman has played a significant role in assisting vessels operating in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, where regional instability has increased risks for international shipping.
The latest incident has prompted renewed calls for stronger measures to safeguard civilian shipping and protect thousands of Indian seafarers working aboard commercial vessels in the Gulf region, where escalating geopolitical tensions continue to threaten maritime security.
