Indian American lawyer Aftab Pureval won the race for mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio, in an election held on November 2. Pureval, 39, defeated former Democratic Congressman David Mann and made a historic victory, India West reported.

He will be the first Indian American and Asian American to lead the city. “Words can’t express how honored and excited I am to be the next Mayor of Cincinnati. “Tonight, we made history! Let’s get to work!” Pureval said in a tweet, the report said.

Pureval is the son of a Tibetan mother and Indian father. His mother and brother accompanied him during his victory speech at Lucius Q in Pendleton. “…Journey to a place called Ohio from New Delhi, for a better life,” he told the crowd amid cheers.

He registered the victory with a whopping 66 per cent to 34 per cent with all precincts counted, according to unofficial results from the Hamilton County Board of Elections, according to nbc.com. With this Pureval will succeed term-limited Mayor John Cranley, who is seeking Ohio’s Democratic nomination for governor in 2022.
