Australia’s Work and Holiday Visa Offers Indians a Limited Route to Live, Travel and Work

The Subclass 462 visa allows eligible young Indians to experience life in Australia while taking up temporary employment, subject to age, eligibility and annual allocation rules

Australia’s Work and Holiday visa, Subclass 462, offers eligible Indian citizens an opportunity to travel around the country, undertake short-term employment and experience Australian life. However, access is limited by eligibility requirements and the number of places available to Indian applicants.

The visa is designed primarily for young adults seeking an extended cultural experience rather than a permanent migration pathway. It allows holders to combine travel with temporary work to help fund their stay.

Applicants must meet the Australian Government’s requirements, which include age limits, a valid passport and specified educational and English-language criteria. They must also satisfy health and character checks and demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to support themselves at the beginning of their visit.

For Indian applicants, the programme operates under an annual allocation system. Where demand exceeds the available places, access may depend on a ballot or selection process, making it important for prospective applicants to check the latest arrangements before applying.

  • The visa generally permits a stay of up to 12 months, during which holders can travel and undertake eligible work

  • Employment conditions apply, including restrictions on how long a visa holder may work for the same employer, subject to specified exemptions. Study is also permitted for a limited period

The scheme can appeal to young Indians interested in gaining international work experience, improving their English-language skills and exploring Australia without committing to a long-term move.

However, the visa does not guarantee employment, permanent residency or an automatic right to extend the stay. Applicants should budget for travel, accommodation, insurance and other living expenses, rather than relying entirely on finding work after arrival.

Prospective applicants should consult the Australian Department of Home Affairs for current eligibility criteria, application charges, ballot arrangements and available places. Checking official guidance before making travel or financial commitments can help avoid errors and unnecessary expenses.

Indian citizens must generally be aged 18 to 30, inclusive, and meet the education, English-language and financial requirements. Applicants are typically required to demonstrate access to at least A$5,000, along with funds for return or onward travel.

The programme was opened to Indians under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement. With only 1,000 first visas allocated annually, the ballot is a key hurdle for applicants.
