Earthquake with 5.8-magnitude hits Nepal; tremors felt in Delhi-NCR

The epicentre of the quake was located in Bajuru district, which lies nearly 400 kilometers northwest of the capital, Kathmandu. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre said tremors were also felt across New Delhi and national capital region, as well as in parts of Rajasthan’s capital city of Jaipur.

Chandigarh: At least one person was killed and several others wounded after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake jolted Nepal on Tuesday,  Jan 24,  a  report in The Trribune, Chandigarh, says.

The epicentre of the quake was located in Bajuru district, which lies nearly 400 kilometers northwest of the capital, Kathmandu. 

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre said tremors were also felt across New Delhi and national capital region, as well as in .parts of Rajasthan’s capital city of Jaipur. There was no immediate report of loss of life or property from there

This is the tenth earthquake of magnitude 4.5 or above in the region in the last one year, according to data from the US Geological Survey.

Nepal and the rest of the Himalayan region, extending from the Hindukush mountain ranges in the west to Arunachal Pradesh on the east, is one of the most earthquake prone regions in the world. The northward movement of the Indian continental plate and its collision with the Eurasian plate generates frequent tremors in the region.

The quake struck at 2:28 pm with the epicentre in Nepal at a place 148 km east of Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand, the National Centre for Seismology said.

Social media users in Delhi and surroundings said they felt strong tremors
