The Government of India has launched the electronic Overseas Citizen of India (e-OCI) card, marking a major overhaul of OCI services through a fully digital platform designed to make applications and document management easier for millions of Indians living overseas.

The e-OCI card was launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah alongside the upgraded FCRA 2.0 portal as part of the government’s wider digital governance initiative. The new system allows applicants to complete the entire OCI process online, from submitting applications and uploading supporting documents to downloading the approved e-OCI card electronically.

One of the most significant changes is the removal of the long-standing requirement for OCI cardholders to obtain a fresh OCI booklet after receiving a new passport beyond the age of 20. Instead, cardholders will only need to update their new passport details through the online portal while retaining their existing OCI registration number. Existing OCI holders can also generate an e-OCI card digitally in most cases without filing a fresh application or undergoing physical verification.

  • The digital card is expected to reduce paperwork, minimise the risk of lost or damaged documents, and improve access to consular and immigration services

  • Physical OCI booklets already issued will remain valid, while the digital version will be rolled out alongside the existing system

To download the e-OCI card, eligible users must log into the official OCI Services portal using their registered credentials. After signing in, they can access the e-OCI section, select the approved application, generate the digital card and download it for secure storage on a mobile device or computer.

The Ministry of Home Affairs said the initiative is aimed at providing faster, paperless and more citizen-friendly services for the global Indian diaspora, with more than five million OCI cardholders expected to benefit from the new digital platform.
