India witnesses surge in Covid-19 cases after days of lull

42,015 new cases and 3,998 deaths in last 24 hours.

After days of lull India on Wednesday (July 21, 2021) saw a surge in fresh Covid-19 cases with 42,015 new cases and 3,998 deaths in last 24 hours.

The Indian Union Health Ministry released data that also suggested 36,977 recoveries. With the new cases the total number of active cases in the country stands at 4.07 lakh.

A day earlier, India had witnessed the lowest Covid-19 cases in 125 days. On Tuesday the number of cases released by the Health Ministry stood at 30,093.

The daily positivity rate in the country is 2.27 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate is 2.09 per cent.

Two-thirds of the Indian population have developed antibodies against Covid-19. Children also constitute among the population pf people who have developed antibodies against the virus that causes Covid-19.

The Indian state of Maharashtra recorded significant jump in the death toll, as the state added 3,509 COVID-19 deaths after revising its data for the 14th time. The total death toll in India has risen to than 4.18 lakh.

Meanwhile, releasing the fourth national serosurvey findings, the Union Health Ministry said the two-thirds of the Indian population have developed antibodies against Covid-19. Children also constitute among the population pf people who have developed antibodies against the virus that causes Covid-19.

A sero-survey comprises testing of blood serum of a group of individuals. This data is used to monitor trends in prevalence of the coronavirus at the level of an administrative unit, say district or any other.

As per the survey findings, more than 50 per cent of children in the age group of 6-17 years have been exposed to Covid-19 and have developed antibodies against it.

Despite 41.18 crore (410.18 million) vaccinations done, 40 crores (400 million) people are still vulnerable, according to Union Ministry of Health.
