An Indian-flagged cargo vessel sank off the coast of Oman after suffering an engine failure, prompting a major international rescue operation that saved all 14 crew members.

The vessel, MSV Virat 1, went down approximately 80 nautical miles off Ras Al Hadd on Sunday, according to Indian and Omani authorities. The crew abandoned the ship after the mechanical failure left it unable to operate safely at sea.

The Embassy of India in Muscat confirmed that all sailors were rescued and transferred to the commercial vessel Jabal Ali 9, which is transporting them safely to Mumbai. The embassy said the crew members were in good health following the incident.

Search and rescue efforts were coordinated by Omani authorities, the Indian Embassy and nearby vessels after the crew moved into a life raft when the ship became disabled. India’s Directorate General of Shipping later confirmed that the vessel had sunk

According to maritime tracking data, MSV Virat 1 was registered under the Indian flag and was operating as a cargo vessel in the Arabian Sea.

The rescue operation also received support from the United States Navy. The US Fifth Fleet said it received a distress call at around 0700 GMT and dispatched a P-8 maritime patrol aircraft, which arrived first at the scene and deployed emergency rescue equipment.

Eleven crew members were recovered by Jabal Ali 9. The remaining three sailors were rescued by an MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln after their life raft overturned in rough sea conditions. The guided-missile destroyer USS Michael Murphy also assisted in the response.

The incident comes amid heightened maritime security concerns in the region, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz. Recent military operations and attacks involving commercial shipping have increased tensions in waters critical to global trade and energy supplies.

Despite the loss of the vessel, the successful rescue ensured that all crew members survived the ordeal without reported injuries.
