Indian Professionals Debate Value of Relocating to US Amid Rising Immigration Costs

  • Labour-market researchers stated that global competition for skilled Indian talent has intensified as Europe, the Gulf, Singapore, and Canada actively recruit technology professionals through streamlined residency programmes

  • Observers expect the discussion surrounding brain drain, reverse migration, and global career mobility to remain prominent throughout 2026

Indian technology and business professionals are increasingly debating whether relocating to the United States remains financially and professionally worthwhile amid rising immigration costs, uncertain visa policies, and expanding opportunities within India itself, according to discussions circulating during the past 24 hours.

The debate intensified after a widely discussed LinkedIn post by startup executive Anushk Sharma argued that moving to the US is no longer automatically advantageous for highly skilled Indian professionals already earning competitive salaries in cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, and Gurugram.

Sharma suggested that professionals earning strong compensation in India may not significantly improve their quality of life by pursuing expensive overseas education or uncertain employment-based migration pathways in America.

The discussion resonated strongly within Indian technology circles and diaspora communities, particularly among engineers, startup founders, and mid-career professionals evaluating international relocation opportunities

Migration analysts noted that the US remains highly attractive for advanced research, entrepreneurship, and top-tier technology careers, especially in Silicon Valley and major innovation hubs. However, rising living costs, visa backlogs, and immigration uncertainty have complicated long-term planning for many Indian-origin professionals.

India’s rapidly expanding technology ecosystem, startup investment environment, and global outsourcing leadership have also created more high-paying domestic opportunities than existed a decade earlier.

Several professionals participating in the online debate argued that international migration decisions are increasingly shaped by personal lifestyle preferences rather than assumptions of automatic financial advancement.

Indian-American business groups observed that diaspora success stories continue inspiring migration aspirations, though newer applicants are approaching overseas education and employment decisions more cautiously.
