Several students still believe international education offers better exposure
A growing number of Indian students are rethinking their plans to study abroad as rising expenses, stricter visa rules and global tensions make overseas education less attractive, reported millenniumpost.in.
Many students in Kolkata and other cities say the financial burden of foreign education is becoming difficult for middle-class families to manage. Tuition fees, along with the high cost of accommodation, food and travel, are forcing students to explore opportunities within India instead.
The report quoted Shaborna Roy and Rupsa Mukherjee, second-year BSc Economics students at Loreto College, said they do not plan to pursue higher studies overseas. Apart from the rising costs, tightening visa regulations and concerns over tensions in the Middle East have also influenced their decision.
In her statement in the report, Suhita Mondal, a BA English Honours student at Shri Shikshayatan College, shared similar concerns. She said that even though scholarships are available, the overall living expenses abroad remain too high for many families.
Similarly, Soumili Dutta, an engineering student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, quoted as saying “I will rather focus on improving skills and continue higher education in India.”
The trend is reflected in government data as well. According to figures shared by the Ministry of Education in the Rajya Sabha, the number of Indians travelling abroad for studies fell from 9.08 lakh in 2023 to 6.26 lakh in 2025 — a decline of nearly 31 per cent.
