Four former police and intelligence officers got bail in the alleged farming of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientist Nambi Narayanan in a 1994 espionage case.

The Kerala High Court granted the ex-police officers bail on Friday and asked for evidences against them when Additional Solicitor General SV Raju opposed their bail on the grounds of seriousness of the case and the officers’ alleged link with the Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence and their attempt to sabotage the country’s cryogenic project that Narayanan was a part of in the 1990s.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) assured the court about the evidence. It offered to provide proof when the case progresses.

In June 2021, the CBI booked former Intelligence Bureau (IB) deputy director RB Sreekumar and 16 other police personnel allegedly for falsely implicating ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan in the espionage case.

The 16 police personnel were booked in June, as the apex court constituted committee (2018) submitted its report, and the top court accepted it

Four officers who got bail in the case include, RB Sreekumar, S Vijayan, Durgadutt (both former Kerala police officers), and former IB official S Jayaprakash.

A single bench of Justice Ashok Menon of the Kerala High Court granted them bail.

The CBI vehemently opposed the bail. Two Maldivian women, who were also implicated in the case, also opposed the bail pleas of the police officers.

Earlier, in April, the Supreme Court had ordered the CBI to investigate the framing of Nambi Narayanan, calling the matter “serious” that required “deeper investigation”.

The 16 police personnel were booked in June, as the apex court constituted committee (2018) submitted its report, and the top court accepted it.

The police officers had arrested Narayanan in 1994, and was released after he was exonerated following CBI closure report.
