Karnataka Yet to Refund Fees to SC Students Admitted Under Management, NRI Quota Medical Seats

Nearly a year after announcing the scheme, eligible students continue to await reimbursement as delays raise concerns over access to medical education

The Karnataka Government has yet to reimburse tuition fees for Scheduled Caste (SC) students admitted to private medical colleges under the management and Non-Resident Indian (NRI) quota, despite announcing the financial support nearly a year ago.

The fee reimbursement scheme was introduced to reduce the financial burden on SC students who secured medical seats through these categories. However, many eligible students and their families say they are still waiting for the promised refunds, leaving them under considerable financial strain.

According to reports, students have already paid substantial tuition fees to private medical colleges to secure admission, expecting the State Government to reimburse the amount later. The continued delay has prompted concern among students, parents and education stakeholders, who say the uncertainty is affecting families that had relied on the government’s assurance.

  • The reimbursement policy was intended to ensure that deserving SC students were not denied medical education because of financial constraints, even if they gained admission under the management or NRI quota

  • While the government had publicly committed to extending this support, the refund process has yet to be completed for many beneficiaries

Student representatives have urged the state authorities to expedite the release of funds, arguing that prolonged delays undermine the objective of promoting equitable access to professional education. They have also sought greater transparency regarding the status of applications and the timeline for disbursing the pending reimbursements.

The Karnataka Government has not yet announced a definitive schedule for clearing the outstanding payments. With the new academic cycle approaching, affected students have called for immediate action to ensure that financial uncertainty does not disrupt their studies or discourage future applicants from pursuing medical education under the scheme.

The issue is expected to remain under close scrutiny until the pending reimbursements are released and the government’s commitment is fully implemented.
