Investigators are examining whether the suspects may be connected to additional commercial robberies reported across Durban over recent months
South African police have arrested three suspects in connection with an armed robbery targeting an Indian-owned jewellery business in Durban, with the arrests confirmed within the past 24 hours following a rapid police operation.
According to KwaZulu-Natal police officials, armed men entered the jewellery store during business hours earlier this week and reportedly threatened employees before stealing cash, gold ornaments, and luxury watches. Surveillance footage and vehicle tracking data reportedly helped investigators identify the suspects.
“Specialised crime units acted quickly after receiving intelligence regarding the movement of stolen goods,” a provincial police spokesperson stated during a media briefing
Authorities confirmed that some stolen jewellery items and firearms believed to have been used during the robbery were recovered during raids carried out at multiple properties connected to the suspects.
The incident had generated widespread concern among Indian-origin business owners in Durban, where jewellery traders and family-owned retail businesses have increasingly reported security threats and robbery attempts in recent years.
Community representatives praised the swift police response but urged authorities to strengthen long-term commercial security measures. “Business owners continue facing significant safety risks,” said a local trade association leader.
The Indian Consulate in Johannesburg acknowledged the arrests and expressed appreciation for cooperation between law enforcement agencies and community witnesses who assisted investigators.
Crime analysts noted that jewellery businesses remain attractive targets for organised robbery groups because of the high value and mobility of stolen inventory.
